1 Artemis Fowl

Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old genius, who is also a criminal. The Fowl family was a family of great fortune but lost millions in a bad business deal where Artemis Fowl the senior also disappeared. Artemis Fowl the younger is determined to recover the money that lost the Fowl's their billionaire status. He decides to exploit the fairy people who are hiding deep beneath the earths crust protected by their highly superior technology. Each fairy has a large ransom fund, so Artemis decides to kidnap one. This has never been done before. Artemis sets out to do this aided by the fairy bible and his giant bodyguard Butler. Artemis succeeds in kidnapping fairy police officer Holly Short. So begins the fast paced war between the fairies and Artemis' intelligence.

Artemis is a stated criminal, but this is not portrayed in a positive light. Even so, the seriousness of his actions is not fully realized. Artemis also does a lot of manipulating other people. Characters use minor swearwords once or twice, the main swearword is of fairy origin and is never translated. Butler is a body guard and has many weapons at his disposal. He beats up different people. The fairies use guns, but don't shoot to kill. A character is shot with a tranquilizer. A bomb is used; people fight with a deadly animal. The violence has a sci/fi feel.

This is the first of a series that prizes friendship, loyalty and selflessness. Artemis' tactics and mindset are shown to be wrong and not worth it. Butler trusts Artemis with his life and the life of his sister. Betrayal and contempt for human (and fairy) life is not rewarded without great cost.

In this series I see Artemis as the one who is changed by his friendships drastically. The first three books are about the give and forgiving everyone does of Artemis and the two after are about Artemis giving back to those who first gave to him. Does this not sound familiar? "We love because he first loved us." John 4:19 NIV. No, Artemis' friends are not God and Artemis is not all bad but I can see this verse in these books. Also these books made me laugh out loud, no easy feat I assure you.
