Beka Cooper (ancestor to George Cooper of the Lady Knight Chronicles, if you've read them) is trying to stay alive in the band of law keepers, called Dogs. She is apprenticed to some of the best Dogs in town, becoming their Puppy. Beka must learn the ins and outs of being a Dog, and deal with people on the wrong side of the law.
Where do I start? Maybe with the Dogs, who work for the law, and take bribes, ALL of them? Maybe with there being a price that the criminal lords have to pay to escape notice? Maybe with friends who jump in and out of bed with each other like it was a neighborhood trampoline? Maybe with a romantic interest who, a. kills people and b. takes part in the neighborhood trampoline? Or maybe our main character who talks to dead people? Or the child serial killer? I think there might be something I've missed...
Beka is a decent person. Her trainers are also decent. Beka is committed to doing what she thinks is right.
If you want to get a good idea what this book is like, watch primetime television. It's as though Ms. Pierce did that, and then wrote a book about it, set in a fantasy world.
